They are having an anniversary sale and a good amount of Noro Silk Garden Sock Yarn shades are available for only $13.99 a ball.

Many of you have commented on my personal version of the Summer Linen Wrap (below, as seen in Gifted knit in Berroco Linen Jeans).

Well, my version (below) is made using one ball of said Noro. It has been worn a lot this past winter. And, the way spring is going so far... it will be worn a lot more before any "summer" wrap will be needed in my neck of the woods.

I do have to tell you.... I have AB-so-LUTE-ly no idea what colourway mine is knit in. I never noted it down and the wrapper has been swallowed up somewhere in my studio. SO sorry! I can tell you that it has lots of shades that are pinky, winey and rusty along with greens and a vibrant orange that grew on me. Noro has a way of making colours grow on you...

Lately, I have been thinking a lot about gauge. Then today I got this message...

Hi Mags,

I was in Vancouver last Christmas and found a store that had Americo yarn. I naturally bought enough to make Mothed. I’ve been swatching and am having a dickens of a time getting gauge. If I use 6mm needles I can get 20 st over 4 inches. I’ve tried this in the round, knitting flat but can’t seem to hit the 18 st. augh! Anyhow, I’ve looked at the over one hundred knitters who have knit this pattern and no one else is having this problem.

Any tips that you may have would be most appreciated.

Sorry to hear you are struggling. From your Ravelry info it appears that you are a knewbie knitter... welcome!
Here are some words of advice that were shared with me years ago...

Needle size DOES NOT matter.... GAUGE matters!!

Just move up to a larger needle and swatch again.
I have the total opposite problem... I am a chronic loose knitter! I used 3.25mm needles to get gauge for Mothed in the Americo... gasp! I've been knitting for years and I know to just disregard the needle size of ANY project I take on.
Between you and me, I just want to smack--just lightly ;)-- any knitter that proclaims with hand on hip, "I have PERfect gauge!". Honestly! I believe there is no such thing for ALL projects-- I'm sure some will disagree with me!
The needle size stated on a yarn band or in a pattern is simply a suggested size to start with. There is absolutely nothing wrong and certainly no shame in moving up or down as many needle sizes as needed to create a beautiful, well fitting and satisfying project.
Always remember the goal is the joy found in creating your knitted project NOT obtaining gauge at the suggested needle size.
Now I'll step down from my soap box.. :)
I know this may be frustrating--especially when you are revved up to start a project-- but, you'll get those 18 stitches to 4" and you'll enjoy making and wearing Mothed... I know it!

FYI-- elann.com is hosting a great sale on Patons Classic Wool. At half the price you would find elsewhere, I just could not say "no"!
This has got to be my all time favourite go-to-yarn for basic knits-- toasty pullovers, fireside socks, hats and mitts. It is also the most reliable and readily accessible wool that I have found for felted projects.

I have been making little felted bowls out of it to hold "dry goods" as part of my pret-a-porter line and I have been running low on select colours.

Above you can see a litter of them drying and shaping on some bowls. I like the way the little contrast coloured center dot makes them full of whimsy.
I also love to watch the way people pick them up. They cradle them like little kittens or as if they were crafted from fragile porcelain. Hah! Us felters know how tough they are!
Soon, I'll have lots of new colours to play with!
I just love the way the shades look in my shopping cart... come hither pumpkin and wisteria!

And, since I had a teensy-weensy bit of room left in my cart, I tossed in a bag of this for me...

I see something Free People inspired for a cool summer evening made out of this. At less than 17 bucks for a bag of 10 balls... how could I resist?
Oh, and I tossed in 3 skeins of this...

You never know when you need something woolly in Malt Heather. And... at less than $5 for 200 grams? Pleeeeease!

I know... they have popped up everywhere the past few fashion seasons.

Created from light, light natural Indian cotton, hand printed in black with discreet touches of a metallic silver, they could not be discarded.

A wise soul once said, if you wore the trend the first time around...
don't even think about it the second time around!

I simply could not part with them so they had been salted away--- for years. Some of you may know that I have had this odd form of "separation anxiety" with previous pieces in my fashion archive.
Then one day... this image popped up in my inbox, thanks to Gudrun Sjoden...

I can tie a knot!!!

A bit of cutting, sewing, ball stuffing and knotting and I got me a pair of these...

Yes, I went quite a bit shorter than and did not pile them on as much as Gudrun. My lifestyle isn't quite what is envisioned by Swedish fashion stylists. But I do love them... even more than the original pants!

What to gather:

wooden balls or beads- the ones I used are 1" in diameter.
fabric strip measuring a minimum of 45"-- the longer the strip the longer the necklace. Piece lengths together until desired length. For width, measure the circumference of your balls and add 1" for a 1/2" seam allowance. My 1" balls have a circumference of 3" so my strips were 4" wide.
large safety pin to aide in turning the tube right side out.

What to do:

Fold fabric strip lengthwise with right sides facing.
Stitch into a long tube using a 1/2" seam allowance.
Turn tube right side out using the safety pin.
Press, if desired.
Fill with balls and knot as your heart desires...

... when you happen upon something that makes you smile?
I'm a big keeper of ticket stubs, matchbook covers, cardboard coasters, cafe receipts. I tuck them into t-shirt drawers and yarn baskets and into books. I love that instant when one of those treasures shows itself. It is a priceless treat to be transported back to a lovely moment.
I've also kept many pretty postcards and lots and lots of snapshots...

I recently tripped across this photo from a pattern booklet I worked on years ago.
This fantastic face belongs to my great nephew. Yes... my great nephew! If you do the math... I know, it is impossible!!
Simon is now twice as big.
As soon as I could, I popped it up on Facebook and tagged him in the image.
I thought for certain it would cause grumbles of embarrassment.
BOY, WAS I WRONG!
Within a minute of it appearing he made it his profile picture. And, it has remained his picture for over a week now.
I look forward to his posts so I can see that wonderful smirk under that fishy little cap. And, ooohhh those freckles.

I dug through some of my working files of the various fish motifs I worked on while developing the design.
You can use it to come up with your own cap. Or use it on a bag... or a pocket... or a patch on a blanket... or turn it on it's tail and make it into socks...

This Queen Street West location, a few doors down from Bathurst, has become a Toronto yarn lovers mecca of all things lush and lovely.

Tempting baskets filled with fantastic pima cotton in a thick and thin fingering weight...

... snuggled next to bodaciously, bulky butter-soft wools.

There are loose, calling reelings of smooth, cool cottons in the most lovely shades...

... and gently twisted skeins of warm wools.

Ooooh... and lookie at what we have here! A whole wall of Winter Flame--- that seductive alpaca/wool of Mothed fame!
If I were asked, "if you could only knit with one yarn for the rest of your life, what would that one yarn be?" I would not hesitate on an answer. Americo Winter Flame!
The colours... the hand... the drape!
Sometimes I think it is fortunate I live about two hours away. Any closer and I could easily become The Crazy Yarn Lady because of my potential daily "fix".

... and a wonderful new chapter!
Today I say goodbye to a wonderful era that spanned 18 years.
Today I open my arms to all the wonderful opportunities a fantastic change always brings.
As of today, January 1st, 2011, I and my partner have ended a licensing agreement with a company that made our Mission Falls yarns available to yarn shops for the past five years.
In a nut shell...

Sad new:
As of today, the Mission Falls brand is no longer.
Happy news:
As of today, the licensee has begun liquidation of Mission Falls products. Yippppppeeeeeee for all you yarnie makers!

Many of you may not be aware that I was creative director of Mission Falls for 13 years and chief designer for 15. Even less of you may know that almost half a lifetime ago I co-founded and created Mission Falls yarns. All of the building and creating and learning.... what fun that was! What a gift!!
Being removed from the day to day of the business operations at Mission Falls for the past five years and not contributing creatively for three years has made the good-bye to this "baby" fairly easy.
I have authored books, contributed designs, overseen projects, made all sorts of "stuff" and traveled the world independent of Mission Falls and I am loving it.
I am sad, however, that Mission Falls yarns and patterns will do longer be available to you, the knitter, crocheter and maker.
Every time I read or hear mention of Mission Falls yarns it is almost always focused on the colours that defined them. I ADORE colour and it has always warmed me to know that my love of colour brought joy to others. Thank you!
Well, I am off to create more lovely colours.... fresh and fabulous colours... what a gift!

The latest Knitty is up and fabulous!!

I had some time to come up with a design contribution this time around and Amy was kind enough to include it with some stellar designs from the likes of Norah Gaughan and Jordanna Paige.
Here is my pattern... Mothed.

I guess the name really does say it all, but here’s the back story...
I have had more than my fair share of loss by moth over the years. Every time it happens my heart feels a little more heavy. How do those winged monsters know which knit in my closet is my latest favourite woolly to wear?!?!

What I want for this season is an easy as pie, super soft, wonderfully warm, top down raglan with the simplest of details that weighs about two feathers. The kicker? I’ll be adding some real/simulated moth activity as I knit! Hey, if you can’t beat ‘em ... join ‘em!

I’ve kept the design very simple so that my increasing collection of scarves and wraps will not be fighting for attention when I layer them on. The nice, open neckline has a very simple thick ridge pattern achieved by alternating double rounds of knit and purl. Neither the body nor sleeves have any shaping. All hems end with a round of reverse stockinette stitch before loosely binding off.

The moth “activity” (aka- simple yarn over eyelets) can be found only on the sleeves-- starting with small nibbles at the top and working with increased hunger down to the bracelet length wrist.

Americo’s yarns are one of the most thrilling. I'll fill you on about their Toronto shop in a short while. Their thick and thin spun Winter Flamme offers the perfect combination of lightness and coverage when working with larger than labelled needles. This yarn blocks like a dream but I chose to let the edges of my version lightly roll for a casual and relaxed look. I know I will be stuffing this into my bag on those occasions when I am uncertain as to how chilly I’ll be when out and about. It can be quickly pulled out, flicked open and tossed on.

Maybe next summer when those moths are up to their mischief they’ll see the “damage” on the sleeves... consider it leftovers... and move on. Fingers crossed...

Today I dropped into our local Salvation Army Thrift Store in search of wool sweaters to felt and make "stuff" out of. It is a bit too early for a good winter selection but I did happen across a quite a lovely 100% cashmere cardigan from Lands End...

in a lovely shade of aqua...

in pretty darn good condition...

with a price tag of only $3.00!
New, they are $150.00!!!!!
My experience is, cashmere does not felt well so it does not suit my "stuff making" project but boy there sure is a little room in my closet.
Do your closet, your wallet and those in need a great favour and visit your local good works thrift store. You might want to drop a buck or two in the bucket at the cash.
I did... it only somewhat lessened the guilty pleasure I felt as I walked out the door with such a lovely treat....
Same time next week..... for wool sweaters... of course... :)

... from me to me to celebrate Gifted!
I am not much of a sock knitter--- gasp! And, I certainly did not want to hide this beautiful Noro colourway under boots… so I made this instead!!

I had just finished all the projects for Gifted and thought this would be a lovely little gift for me to make and celebrate.
The original design from the book--- Linen Summer Wrap--- is a wrap/scarf for, well, the summer months.

I loved the cool, dry hand of Berroco's Linen Jeans and felt the soft neutral contributed to a sense of coolness I wished for the piece. Perfect for the summer or to take along on a tropical vacation...

It being late fall at the time, I grabbed my hot-hued, woolly Noro!
I used a kitchen scale to wind off two fairly equal balls out of the one that I had.
I did not block the finished piece. I liked the way the skinny ends had become colourful tendrils.

I started and finished it while on an incredible trip I took to Morocco last November. The colours in the wrap mimicked many I saw in the souks of Marrakesh.
Mmmmm… this wrap makes me think of mint tea…

A free pattern!!

Not every idea and every pattern can fit between the covers of one itty, bitty book. Sometimes a design or two must be shelved. Gifted had such moments. But, fret not! Dust barely began to collect on that shelf before I saw a good reason to bring out this "gifty" idea for all to make.

Cinched!

This is a fun, quick felted belt that makes my heart sing...
Very few things thrill me like a good stripe. With Cinched I am able to play with colours, stripe widths and spacings while formulating new ways to use colour when designing larger projects.

I'm on my third Cinched. Unfortunately, for those around me, I have been closeting my creations for my own, personal use. I know..... baaaaaaaaad gift maker ;).
FYI, I feel there is absolutely nothing wrong in practicing a project--- many, many, many times if needed--- until I feel happy enough to wrap it up and give it away. That is my story and I am sticking to it....

Doodling as a "zen" and "creative" exercise!

For all I know, this has been going on for eons ... but it is new to me!
I tripped across this wonderfulness when I started hunting down more info on a very inspiring stuff maker with a really great name---Julie Fei-Fan Balzer.
I've been playing with photo-transfer ideas for my own personal creative exploits and started watching YouTube clips totally mesmerized by Julie's makings.
With a click of my mouse I fell into this...

I could not wait to grab a fine tipped marker and start!
I must say, seeing that I spend a bulk of my creative time either knitting, stitching or keyboarding, the cool feel of a pen in my hand is odd yet pleasing.
Here is the start of my first attempt.
I began by mimicking Julie's lovely layers of ribbons and went from there....

I can only get better... I'm liking this. :)

... on my mind. That's what it must be!
It is my birthday this month so I thought I would buy myself an early birthday gift.
It arrived today. Just in time to be my companion while lying under a shady tree to avoid the second blast of heat that has drifted over us.

I have yet to read a word. I quickly did a little flip through and lost my breath. From what I understand, on the day of her death Diego insisted that Frida's closet be sealed for 50 years. Once opened in 2004 every item was lovingly restored and catalogued.

Frida's life and style were an integral part of her art, and she is long overdue for recognition as a fashion icon. "

Oh, all of her rebozos!
I was fortunate enough to tour Frida's home in Coyoacan the last time we visited fantastically, dizzying Mexico City.

I could not help but cry as I moved from room to room. The beauty and passion and pain of her life could still be felt.

This is my cotton rebozo. I picked it up in a market on an adventure in Oaxaca. I was tickled to see one almost like it in the tiny gift shop at Frida's Museum. A little bit of Frida lives with me in The County.... sigh.

Now, where is that cool breeze?

The older I get the more I appreciate hindsight and the more tolerant and philosophical I have become of chaos--- even when in the thick of it.
Three summers ago we endured

country road maintenance.

The "staging area" was the farmer's field directly across from the house. 6:30 every morning the workers would arrive with their pick-up trucks clanking and grinding. Loud, manly voices would travel across the lawn, up the wall and directly into our bedroom window. By 7 am the giant road eating machines would fire up. At 7:01 I would close the front facing windows keeping out a good amount of the dust and dirt but barely muffling the ten hours of mechanical cacophony.
It felt like months... it might have only been weeks.
When it was all done the road appeared only slightly wider and was filled and flattened. It was not "real" paving that topped up the surface, but what was applied kept most of the dust down and needed not to be sprayed with that gooey and odorous gawd-knows-what-black-muck-paper-processing-by-product-carcinogen that was used in the past. Brand new good-sized culverts were installed and Skeeter added a new mischief to her repertoire-- Culvert Crawlin'. Most disturbing was the frightening depth of the dug up gutters. I figured them to be deep enough to swallow up a Smart car. In the end, really not worth all the caffufle... or, so I thought...

Now I have what I have appreciated driving down other country roads in The County...

...wild day lilies in my gutters!! Those ominous, Smart car swallowing gutters!!!

All the grinding and moving had created the most lovely no-maintenance garden for me and all who travel down our road to enjoy from the end of June to the beginning of August.

Isn't chaos grand?

I just could not help myself when I saw this dah-ling pair at the local dollar store.
I'll be putting them to good use. I've got lots and lots of felting to do over the next little while as I ready myself for the yearly Prince Edward County Studio and Gallery Tour.
This is my second year participating. It was so much fun meeting all the very interesting people who swung by last September I thought I would be a fool not to participate again.
I whipped up this pincushion the other week.

The shape reminds me of a Donut Peach. Have you ever tried one? Ohhhhh... you really should. They usually show up in my market sometime in July. They are thrilling to the taste buds... but I digress. I'm thinking I'll make a few more of the pin cushions for the show. I do have to come clean, however.

The cheery felted ball punctuating the cushion is store bought---- eeeeeek! Ornamantea has lovely, well-priced ones in colours that make me happy. I, once again, could not help myself. Besides, as they use to say at the end of Craft Corner Deathmatch, "sometimes it is just cheaper and easier to buy it"! Gosh, I enjoyed that show...

Knitting Daily TV has offered up a pattern from Gifted that is one of my personal favourites!!
I have an armful amount in assorted colours that I love to pile on to gussy up my “uniform” of jeans and gray T’s.
For “gifting” I group them in threes and tie them together with a pretty ribbon.
This is such a great way to use up all the odds and sods in your stash....
Dig up all those walnut sized leftovers of colourful sock yarn you have squirreled away!!
Imagine how fantastic they would look as the wrapper yarn!!!
Oooooohhhhhhhh....

... being a "green" knitter.
Correction.... it is easy!

Since cutting up my silk skirt and turning it into Paris Recycled for Ann Budd's book, Knitting Green, I have never looked at my closet quite the same way!
Some of you might remember me cutting up jeans for a project a while back.... quite a while back!

My original idea was not working so my knit strips of denim were frogged and my giant ball of "yarn" was shelved.

Well, one thing led to another and I soon forgot about my recycled jeans project. That was until a few weeks back....
I happened upon a grand yard sale find.... four good, solid, wooden chairs in need of a hard scrubbing and a little TLC. The thrill was they were only 5 dollars each!

Then... I had the reduce-reuse-recycle- green- and funky- stylish light bulb moment!!!!
I dusted off my big, denim "yarn" ball...

reached for those huge, honkin' orange needles and started knitting...

... tada!!!

A wee bit of "toosh cush" for those spending time on my porch this summer!

Basic Sittin' Purty Toosh Cush Pattern

about 8 oz of jeans legs cut in a long continuous strip about 1/2 to 3/4 inch wide. Sometimes I knotted the ends together. Sometimes I hand-stitched the ends together with red embroidery cotton. I liked mixin' it up.
12-19 mm needles-- whatever you need to make you happy with your project.
Cast on 20 sts (or whatever you need) using the backward loop method.
Work in Stocking Stitch for desired length.
Shape, if necessary, by decreasing or increasing 1 st at each edge as needed.
Cast off.
Cut 2 strips to about 20" in length. Use to secure the "cush" to the chair with a nice knotted bow onto a leg or the chair back .

Please forgive me... but I must hurry off now ! I have three more chairs to tart up before Friday....

I've just cast on this...

The Lacy Baktus (sorry, you need a Ravelry login for this link) is one of those fantastic, free knitting pattern viral explosions that Ravelry enables. It is a simple and simply lovely design that I know I'll be grabbing for when the cool air takes over. I have two hanks of Mirasol Chirapa that have been waiting for "a reason" and I think this is it. Pretty, pretty yarn and soft, soft, soft.
The designer, Terhi Montonen, once spoke through a beautiful blog she called mustaa villaa (black wool). Her stories stopped 2009/11/04 with an explanation, but I still visit from time to time. Her hats and socks and wraps bring joy... much like a Saturday in pajamas.

Ingrid Jansen's Wool and Wood Stools--- along with hangers and pillows and blankets and garlands--- are a tasty melange of soft and hard, bright and dull, old and new, and a perfect celebration of Earth Day.... reduce... reuse... recycle!

I've got wood! I've got wool! I even have a few handy tools! Now, with Ingrid's inspiration, I just might head off and create my own variation. I can guarantee you that what I may come up with will not be anywhere near as precious as all of these!

... I am like a dog with a bone!
I'll let you know right up front there is no knit content in the post.... just a gnawing ache I must share.
You'll need some background to get up to speed...
I spent a good chunk of last November in Morocco. It was my first time there and I must admit the whole adventure was truly dizzying. The saturated colours, the fragrant spices, the constant push of the souks, the thick scent of Jasmine all had me reeling as if in a dream. After "roughing it" for two weeks, we splurged on an incredible riad (bed and breakfast) located in the Medina section of Marrakesh for our last four nights...

I am hell bent in creating the "feel" I experienced during our stay. Open air... lounge-y daybed... sumptuous textiles... mint tea...
Where do I want my "riad" to be? On our relatively narrow side porch overlooking the garden.
However, I must keep in mind the following:

I live in an 1860's Ontario Gothic farmhouse.
"Outdoor living" is from June until September.
Mosquitoes also enjoy "outdoor living" until the end of July.
My budget-- as usual-- is shoe-string at best.

Yes... lots of thinking... hmmmmm... back to my knitting... more thinking... often the thinking is easier... ;-)

Real hard.... for Blue Sky Alpacas' Dyed Worsted Cotton!

Knitting up like spun silk, this softer-than-soft organic cotton-- don't even get me started about all the fantastic colours--- was the only choice for one of my favourite Gifted projects.

The Precious Baby Jacket was my first project with this scrumptious yarn. It certainly will not be my last.
Precious is what I consider a perfect modern heirloom--- simple, practical and special. Simple and practical are achieved by the construction-- an easy asymmetric, top down project-- and the colour-- a very gender neutral shade called Azul.
The special? Little felted rounds of applique are scattered and colourfully stitched onto the finished knit. More of Blue Sky Alpaca's yarn playlist was used for the felting--- 100% alpaca Melange in Cornflower.

One of the wonderful, lingering by-products of working on Gifted-- where the world is your "yarn" oyster-- was being introduced to new and inspiring fibers to create with.
I have been swatching with some remaining bits of yarn in my stash and have found something that makes me happy.

With a skein of the lovely, soft Orchid, I'll be whipping up a sweet adult sized topper for when the temperatures begin to dip. I know! It's not even summer, yet!!

It must be the lovely spring we are having that has inspired a leafy motif for a design that will be available Julyish.
This will be part of a mini-companion-collection of patterns to celebrate the arrival of Gifted. Available as individual downloads, they will continue on where Gifted leaves off.... so many gifts to make... so many ideas to share... so much fun to have!

I have popped into Cal Patch's blog many times. Hodge Podge Farm is where I first heard details about her new book-- Design-It-Yourself Clothes: Patternmaking Simplified-- and where I get to be a big-eyed fly on the wall of her fantastically, creative life. Ahhhh... to be young and creative and living in Upstate New York....

Alabama Studio Style is a tome of inspiration that makes me weak and... oh... so... dizzy. It is all I can do not to jump in the truck, drive to Florence, Alabama, and offer to be Natalie Chanin's personal assistant-- FOR FREE! I'll make her half-caff coffee lightly wiffed with freshly grated cinnamon. I'll pick up her dropped beads. I'll "love" her thread from dawn until dusk. I'll sleep in the truck and bathe using her garden hose--- I am certain it is the most stunning garden hose. I'll... I'll... I'll.... I'll take a deep breath and contain myself.

Please excuse me. I need to spend some quiet time alone with my two new pals...

..., because it is Wednesday, and look what I found!

Apparently, one of the segments I taped for Knitting Daily TV aired and the free pattern for the project I demonstrated is yours for the taking! The scarf is an homage to Paris with a heavy "reduce, reuse, recycle" bend. Be warned... you will be expected to make you own "yarn". The segment is all about raiding your drawers and closets for inspiring textiles to cut up and knit! Yes, I know, as if our collective stash were not big enough. But, really, think of all the possibilities! Download the "Paris Recycled" pattern and you will then see some lovely detail shots.... me like!
I wish I could tell you more about the airings of Knitting Daily TV. You'll have to check your local PBS listing. Go figure, the Rochester, NY carrier we pick up from the other side of that big lake does not run the program... why I otta!

The project is included in the latest book edited by the ever-fabulous Ann Budd. Knitting Green should be hitting shelves in early May. Do look for it!

I've yet to see the book and have no idea what the final layout included. When I sent Ann my scarf and "pattern" I also included the story of my scarf. I don't know how much of it was used in the final edit so I have included it below in it's entirety...

Paris Recycled

Lately, being green to me has less to do with acquiring new “green things” --- although I do believe this to be very good and very important as the glow of a compact florescent illuminates my desktop-- but more to do with re-purposing, re-creating and “new“ using the things I have already amassed.
Before I donate, throw into the recycle bin , or --gasp-- toss something out completely I try to take time to consider what I can do to turn this "thing" I already have into something I want and will use....
Chipped and broken plates and cups are stored away waiting to be transformed into a colorful garden mosaic; old, worn jeans and overalls are piled fresh and ready in a box to be cut and pieced into a hardy, homespun comforter; special cast-offs of luscious fibres that once hung in my closet wait folded in a basket to be used as a lining or a pillow back or something else new, useful and pretty.
Hence, my Knitting Green project….
On my first trip to Paris-- ahem, let's just say a few years back-- I purchase a long, lovely, smoky blue silk skirt. I had come upon a little boutique just off of Avenue des Champs-Élysées that was filled with all sorts of silky thrills. After a very long time touching and sniffing and snuggling and trying on I deemed one special skirt to be mine. I adored it! The only problem... it was encircled with a bazillion ¾” knife pleats and after a few years the allure of a high maintenance piece of clothing-- as fabulously “Parisian” that it was-- faded. I eventually ended up tossing it in the wash to see what would happen. It came out still long and still smoky blue but without the pleats it was never the same. It had hung in my closet-- unworn-- for years. Every Spring Cleaning I would pull it out, toss it onto the donate pile, pick it out of the donate pile and re-hang it. "Maybe I'll wear it this year... I bought it in Paris!". Eventually it ended up in a basket in my studio waiting for purpose.
Well, with the aid of a straight edge and a rotary cutter the new raison d’etre of my Parisian skirt showed itself..... a soft, lovely, smoky blue silk--- scarf! It would be knit as long as the knotted lengths would allow in simple garter stitch with a few dropped stitch rows tossed in for subtle interest.
I stitched a little hand-stamped label onto the scarf. Just in case my memory fails… I’ll always have Paris!

The hope inspiring fresh green in my garden...

A favourite lime green bowl layered with black and natural coloured crockery that always makes me happy...

A muted green piece-- from a local potter-- I have had for many years set against the pea soup green of a newly cherished painting I picked up in Patzcuaro, Mexico...

The way the grass green sings with the purple in my freshly unfurled Moroccan runner...

And the soothing willow green knitting project on my needles...

The design is a greatly modified version of a free pattern available from Classic Elite Yarns. You can't really see much but it is a quick and satisfying top-down and I am about halfway done the first sleeve. The yarn... a perfect weight for my kind of spring weather... Garnstudio Silke-Tweed. The talented designer, Cecily Glowik MacDonald, has a new book with Melissa LaBarre coming that I can't wait to have and to hold. It is called New England Knits and will arrive just about the same time as Gifted.

Be prepared to "misplace" lots of time while you are inspired to create countless little lovelies.
One other smidge of a warning... when at the Pickles site it is in the best interest of all that you do not click "Friends of Pickles" unless your cup of tea is full, there is nothing in the oven and the dog has had a pee.

Working away on "Book 2010".... which I am happy to announce is called........

Gifted!!!

The title gives a lot of it away, but there are bits and bobs of specialness to Gifted that I'll share with you as we approach G-Day.
The day was a rain threatening one. I plopped myself in the living room-- amidst a very highly organized chaos-- with my back up against that round, gold cushion near the center of my pillow filled sofa. Most of the pillows have a story.... made by friends, bought abroad or made by me. I have always loved my needlepoint homage to Kaffe Fasset's "Foolish Virgins" original jacket design-- now available as a scarf in this book. Someday I hope to knit a rendition, but this pillow--- made m-a-n-y years ago on 7pi canvas using a chunky weight wool--- will have to keep me content and inspired until then!

Oh, and under the sofa?
Ms. Skeeter Mudhen, of course, keeping me company....

This year the strawberries are small and easily bruised but are very sweet and very juicy.
Every year I put up at least one batch of jam from strawberries we pick just down the road.
My go-to recipe is from a Donna Hay magazine--- Issue 7.
Enjoy!

Strawberry Vanilla Jam
6 or so cups

3 lbs strawberries cleaned, hulled and halved
2 lbs sugar
3/4 c lime juice-- freshly squeezed
1 vanilla bean halved and scraped (I subsitute 1 tbs of a good quality Mexican vanilla extract when beans are not in my cupboard)

Combine strawberries, sugar, lime juice and vanilla bean and seeds in large saucepan and bring to a gentle boil.
NOTE: if using vanilla extract do not add until jam has thickened.
Skim foam as needed.
Let bubble away until jam has thickened--- 25 to 35 minutes.
If using vanilla, stir it in now.
Ladle into jars and process as you would your favourite jam.

I have always loved that word.... soupçon.... a very small amount; a trace; a hint.
My first trip to Paris--- when I was 20--- included a must visit to Chanel on Place Vendôme. I wondered, fondled and sniffed e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g in the luscious shop for what seemed like hours. At the very end of my swooning I settled on the purchase of one single item--- a blush. The iconic black box with softened corners and silvered linking 'C's' would be my proof it was not all a dream. The name of the shade.... soupçon!
But, I do digress...

Today's soupçon pertains to what is now known as "Book 2010". I know I have said it before, but it is very hard not to share knitterly things that I am excited about without breaking the rule of not sharing knitterly things that I am excited about that have not been published!!!
This is all I dare to share.... at least you might get a smidge of the colours and snippet of the textures...

Well? Didn't spring just get away from me?!? Absolutely no excuse for my poor little blog to be neglected!! Time management... priorities... life "busys"... needed a break...
Anyway... I'm back now and will work hard at not falling off the blogging edge.

Winter will not end here. I swear a record has been broken this season.... we have had over ten, dix, diez consecutive weeks with snow on the ground!!!

I have a deadline looming so I am doing all I can to avoid distractions by anything bright and shiny. But.....

Knitting Daily's Wednesday mailing included not only a free pattern from Simple Style for the beautiful Twisted-V Pullover designed by Alice Halbeisen....

but also the first photograph I have seen of the design I contributed to Ann Budd's latest production!
The Stay-Put Wrap is pretty close to being an instant gratification project. Knit on 10us/6mm needles in yummy Blue Sky Alpacas Worsted Hand Dyes, it is a low stress, almost mindless knitting project that creates an "impact garment" that goes with jeans and a T--- my choice--- or that LBD.
Even though Amazon has April as the publishing date it has arrived wonderfully early and is available now!!!!
I am really pleased with how the final project looks in print. I appreciate the “serenity” of the model… ahhhhh... simple... style...

Believe me, it pains me more than you can imagine not being able to show you all the stuff that is being swatched and stitched and charted and planned for "Book 2010".

I thought it would never be achieved! I am more of a maker and talker than a writer, so these posts have been a very good exercise for me.
I'll use this auspicious occasion to share something sad and something happy.
The something sad?
Today I said good bye to our Christmas tree...

I wait until the absolute last possible moment to remove the decorations and wind up the lights for another year. This year's tree-- the most fragrant of Nova Scotia Balsam Fir-- was set up on December 9th. She glowed in the sitting area off of the kitchen until this afternoon.
Skeeter, tree and me went for our traditional "long walk" into the woods...

The something happy?
I know at least a handful of you have been visiting my blog on a regular basis... so, to celebrate my 100th post I wish to gift you!!
I have a token of appreciation for one lucky person who visits...
eight beautiful buttons.

They are hand crafted in Nepal out of non-endangered water buffalo bone and have been dipped in henna for an antiqued cast. These will look fantastic on all sorts of projects.

Oh my G-A-W-D!!
What a scrumptious combination of Peruvian wool, alpaca and silk.
So s-o-f-t and s-i-l-k-y. And, those luscious undulations of thick and thin? Simply divine!
The quick knit gauge--15 stitches and 22 rows on 6mm/10us-- whips up a fast and satisfying project. You really do not want to do much more than stocking stitch or garter stitch with this yarn. I would suggest letting the "fabric" be made simply with more focus paid on a unique shape or detail
I'm working on a design for "Book 2010"-- as it will be called ;-*-- using the colour Olive 007.
I'm thinking about adding some of these...
I will certainly miss the knitting of this project when it is done.
Note to self- work with this yarn again.

My "me knit" is done and I am very, very happy!!

Now, if the temps could just rise above -25 degrees celsius I just might be able to wear this darling.....
I selected very simple mother of pearl buttons to stay in keeping with the simplicity of the design. Though I originally pulled out round ones I finally decided on square with softly rounded edges.

The buttons were an Ebay acquisition from one of my favourite sources for all things mother of pearly.... Vincy Ming
Not only do they offer wonderful things for embellishing, prompt service and very reasonable prices, but what arrives in the mail are lovely little "gifts" themselves....

... a "me" knit!
Anyone who follows my blog will know that rarely do I start a project just for me... rarer still do I finish anything larger than a scarf or hat.
When you do knittin' for a living the Shoemaker's Children Syndrome kicks in and if what's on the sticks does not make dollars and sense.... it just ain't there.
A few months back I was smitten with a "less is more" knit I stumbled upon in Ravelry.
It must have been the mental wonkies of a lazy New Year's Day-- after an over indulgent Eve-- that had me rooting about my stash to find yarn for the Garter Yoke Cardigan found in the latest issue of Knit.1.
The yarn unearthed was "vintage"... Classic Elite Yarns Evergreen Cotton and Wool--- at the same time Rowan Yarns had their own label on the same stuff. It must have been at least 15 years ago that I added 7 skeins of this yarn to my stash.This yarn was really ahead of it's time by what was written on the label:

EVERGREEN is spun of recycled fibers from spinning mills, garment factories, and other industrial uses of textiles in England. Water and energy are conserved because pre-exsiting colored fibers are used to create the subtle palette eliminating additional dyeing processes. Chemical dyestuff production is lessened. Landfill space reduced. People are employed to sort the fibers. Do your part for the environment by knitting with EVERGREEN from Classic Elite.
45% cotton- 45% wool- 10% unidentified fibers
Label printed on recycled paper.

Finally… pictures! 2 or so more inches and we are done except for the sleeves. Just started on my third skein of yarn. Looks like 4 skeins will be enough. Leaves me extra yarn for a future wrap… sniff… sniff… love the feel and easy knitting of this discontinued yarn… sniff… sniff.

Second sleeve 1/3 done. Dug about my button box and have a few options. Fingers-crossed for a finished project by the 12th!

MODIFICATIONS:

Love buttons but thought there were too many for my taste. Making holes every 20 rows— 7 buttons.
Personal taste wanted a more relaxed finish to the bottom edging— because the yarn has little spring I decided to work 1 row of Rev Stst before casting off in knit. I’m happy.
Making sleeves longer– to wrist– and ended the same way I ended the body.

When this sure fire recipe for a contented life is temporarily upset I turn to the fridge.
No, not for food--- though, I do believe a bit of good chocolate makes every situation a smidge more pleasant. I turn to the fridge for fortitude and a really good reality check!
Our fridge door is filled with a revolving exhibit of all sorts of colourful trinkets and visual treasures from places we have been and things we have done.
But it is a simple black and white photograph that I use as a barometer of how my day is really going....
I figure a typical "off-day" for me could not be anywhere near as daunting as an "off-day" was for him...

... Winter Weather Warning!
Those who make up the weather have us looking skyward for the first big snowfall of the season.
We were to have a "big storm" last weekend, but nothing happened.... maybe today.
We have hauled and stacked wood on the porch so it is dry; the snow shovels were found in the shed out back and are now at the ready just outside the kitchen door; the battery backup is charging in case the power goes; the house is heady with the aroma of pot roast and root veggies; and I am sipping from a big mug filled with Earl Grey tea with honey and lemon.
I have only one thing to say...

... need a warm gift.

I made these warm, snugly mittens for a young lady named, Marelis. She was born and raised in hot, humid, sultry Cuba. So, exactly why did I make her mittens? Well, she is about to endure her first winter in cold, damp, very un-sultry England.

They were quick to make!! I knit both hands--- while figuring out the pattern--- in one casual evening and then knit the thumbs, stitched the snowflakes and sewed up the seams the next. They are knit flat so the stitching can be done easily.

They are now winging their way across the Atlantic and will hopefully arrive before the first snow flies...

I have written up the pattern so you can warm some hands this winter, also.

My contribution to the book was the Fun Flower Mittens...

Lately, small projects have been making me the happiest and I know I am not alone. With small knittings more focus can be paid to new techniques and/or special finishing without being overwhelmed and giving up. I would suggest this as a good first Intarsia project for an otherwise semi-experienced knitter. There is just enough colour changing going on that it will be a challenge. However, the small scale makes it very manageable.

The beads are easily applied after all the knittin' and stichin' have been completed. I like the way they create interest and "shine" to the otherwise flat, lusterless wool. A little bit of bead yin to yarn yang...

I'll repeat here what I shared on Ravelry about this project...

I have always loved Intarsia knitting! I know many will look at this as a daunting project, but I say pshaw! A main key to enjoying Intarsia is to do away with those stupid plastic thingies that are sold for the process— I personally think that they were developed in vengeance by a man who felt he was second to his wife’s knitting! For larger areas of colour, simply make yarn butterflies— doesn't that sound lovely?

... Rhinebeck and the New York State Sheep and Wool Festival!

Some of you may have noticed a noticeable gap between the letters "Q" and "S". I was mulling the feasibility of a virgin Rhinebeck Pilgrimage and thought it would be the perfect "R" if it was realized. Well, mulling became map routing, then room booking, and some day/timer shifting and before we knew it Skeeter was in the truck itching to go!

I had absolutely no idea what to expect. Sheep? Yes. Wool? Yes. Everything else? NO! I was so creatively overloaded by the sights, sounds and smells I am still processing as I type. And, I have a shocking confession.... I bought absolutely nothing.... nada... niente... zilch! There was so much choice my synapses misfired and I simply shut down!!!

What I did take away from Rhinebeck were perfect colours...

perfect faces...

and perfect moments...

I have already started plotting my next Rhinebeck visit. Yes, there will be a next time... this trip was to wet my toes in the Rhinebeck Experience.

My next adventure will start with a vehicle full of fiberlicious females, a "chick music" play list on my Ipod, and a fantastic selection of Merlot and Pinot Noir for the end of each day...

... to lemonade!

Last fall-- just about this time-- I started poking about my closet shelf of store-bought sweaters with preparation for the winter months in mind. I stress "store-bought" because my closet is small and shared. I have a whole, large unshared cupboard containing hand knits... thank you very much ;-)

For a person known to celebrate colour in her design work, I must admit that my shelf is filled mostly of sweaters in variations of grey, oatmeal and stone. Every so often a spark of colour in a shade of a "dead fruit or vegetable" can be caught.... off pumpkin, off rhubarb, off zucchini.

Last year, with a gasp, I grieved the loss of one of the brighter sweaters in my life. A pullover as close to chartreuse that I would dare to wear--- maybe it was closer to dead lime. It was pure wool, loosely knit into a simple v-neck with casual, lightly curling cuffs and hem. It was as light as three feathers. I had worn it for years and it was beginning to show it's age. I envisioned it eventually becoming a "gardening" or "camping" sweater.... but no, this was not to be. One word changed it's fate....

MOTHS!!!

Country living contributes to all sorts of "loss due to critters". One does one's best to thwart the destruction, but every so often the critters win. But, me thinks, the critters may not have won....

"Pure wool, eh?", I mused. Hmmmmmmm........ FELT IT!!!

I did not think to photographically document the perfection of felted fabric my chartreuse lovely created. Most of the body was used-- in bits and bobs-- in various felt applique projects I puttered at. But, like the "oysters" of a chicken or the "cheeks" of a pickerel, I saved the sleeves for a special purpose.... I was not sure at the time for what, but I knew it was to be special.

Fast forward to last week...... and a bit of retail therapy. I picked up a stone coloured, angora blend, garter stitch cardi that Laura Petrie would have been proud to pair with her capris. But... boy sleeves are sure short these days! Are sleeves the new hemline indicator of our economic health?!? Anyway, something was needed to fill the seven inches of bare forearm before winter's arrival...... pickerel cheeks!!!

Just add a little bit of embroidery.....

I do love lemonade!!!

This time of year always seems to get away from me..... putting away summer's diversions and readying a welcome for the coming cold.

I have also been busy preparing "background stuff" for an exciting announcement that will keep me happily focused for the foreseeable future. Nothing has been "finalized" so I wish not to jinx myself with a premature happy dance.

Speaking of happy dances.... today, in Canada, is Thanksgiving Day!!!!

I can’t think of a better way to share my bounty than to offer a pattern for a bag that I keep making and making and making and making for myself and friends…. enjoy!

I like a long strap-- so that the bag sits squarely on my hip-- so I added about six inches to the pattern's template. Oh, the skirt is also a newly completed sewing project. I used the ever-inspiring book, Sew What! Skirts, along with a favourite skirt in my closet to create my own pattern out of kraft paper..... this pattern is certainly a keeper! Now, if I could only create more days in my hour....

magazine cover... ever!! It is always fun anticipating the arrival of a publication containing a project I have contributed... and a good smattering of patience must be kneaded into that anticipation.

This cover story started way back in February....

As with most publications, a "Call for Submissions" is sent out to designers on a list and--- these days--- announced on web sites. I found the "Call" for the Interweave Felt issue on Ravelry. Though I had a lot on my plate at the time, I also had a felt project rattling in my head waiting for a reason to pop out.

My drawing skills are sketchy-- just a bit of a pun intended--so I thought it best to quickly whip up a prototype to best share my idea. With a shallow dig through my stash, I found a few hanks of discontinued Rowanspun 4ply in the fantastic and aptly named shade Squirrel. After some serious quick-step knitting in very loose stocking stitch, a rapid run through the washer-- fingers crossed-- and some flat drying I was ready for the fun part... needle felting with some stashed sliver!

Then, the final step... get it "submission ready" for the editorial eyes of Lisa Shroyer and the rest of Felt's selection team.

Tada!!! This was my submission....
